DIGITAL PRODUCT PASSPORT
The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is rooted in the European Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, 2024/1781). It will apply to cosmetics, among many other products.
The DPP is a digital identity card for each product, designed to simplify access to 3 types of information:
- Legal conformity
- Sustainability
- Circularity
Key steps in the DPP process:
- Collect the required product information and generate a unique product identifier.
- Create the DPP and notify the central EU portal.
- Print the DPP data carrier (QR code) on labels.
- Provide a backup of the DPP to a certified service provider.
- Keep the DPP up to date.
The standard for the DPP is also expected to be finalized by the end of 2025, with obligations for certain products beginning in 2027-2028. The DPP is designed to close the gap between consumer demands for transparency and the current lack of reliable product data.
